ASBURY THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY PROFESSOR CRAIG KEENER WINS CHRISTIANITY TODAY MERIT AWARD FOR NEW BOOK

WILMORE, Ky. (January 2, 2013) – Wilmore, KY –Asbury Theological Seminary New Testament Professor, Dr. Craig Keener, has won the Christianity Today Award of Merit for his book, Miracles: The Credibility of the New Testament Accounts.

The magazine received 455 submissions from 68 different publishers, and chose ten winners and nine noteworthy books for the 2013 award.

In his latest book, Dr. Keener finds that most modern prejudice against biblical miracle reports depends on David Hume’s argument that uniform human experience precluded miracles. Yet current research shows that human experience is far from uniform. In fact, hundreds of millions of people today claim to have experienced miracles. The book focuses on contemporary miracle accounts, and cites hundreds of recent occurrences.

Dr. Keener says that it is time to rethink Hume’s argument in light of the available contemporary evidence. This wide-ranging and meticulously researched two-volume study presents the most thorough current defense of the credibility of the miracle reports in the Gospels and Acts.

Dr. Keener hopes to challenge scholars who dismiss the miracles performed in the Gospels as legends. “Eyewitnesses say these kinds of things all the time. I also want to challenge the bias that says these things can’t be supernatural. I believe God does miracles, and I don’t see why we scholars are not allowed to talk about it,” said Dr. Keener.

Three of his many books have won national awards, and his background commentary has sold over half a million copies (including electronic copies and translations).
