Pastoral Imagination: Cultivating Practices of Faith with Writing

During the month of March, writer, critic and part-time Asbury College professor David Harrity, author of "Morning and What Has Come Since," will be leading a 4-week workshop on "Modern Psalmists." On Mondays, March 3, 10, 17 and 24, 6-8 p.m., in Royal Auditorum on Asbury's Kentucky campus, participants will have the opportunity to see how writers are seeking to commune with God through poetry in literary culture right now through the reading of contemporary poetry, discussions about elements of craft and vocation, conversations about the spiritual dynamics of creating art and literature, and sharing in creative practice through writing exercises and workshops.

The Psalmists of the Old Testament desired deeply to commune with the Creator through words and poetry. There is something sacred and therapeutic about writing down our praises and laments, our admirations and grievances. How can the reading and writing of a psalm effect the Spirit? What role does creativity play in cultivating an atmosphere of contemplation in an individual? What is the role of language in communion with God? How do writers of faith fit in to contemporary literary culture? And how can writing aid a minister on the never-ending odyssey into the deep heart of God?

Admission is free. Email Shannon_Steed@asburyseminary.edu by March 1 to register. For more information about David Harrity, visit davidharrity.blogspot.com .
