Nov. 29: Charles Wesley Celebration (Ky.)
On Thursday, November 29, Asbury Theological Seminary will continue its year-long, tercentennial celebration observance of 300th anniversary of the birth of celebrated Methodist hymn writer, The Reverend Mr. Charles Wesley.
All are invited to chapel worship, 11 a.m. in Estes Chapel, located on the seminary Kentucky's campus. The hour will include art, music and homily. Congregational singing will feature several of the over 6,500 hymns written by this beloved hymnist. President J. Ellsworth Kalas, with the assistance of several faculty members and Organist of the Chapel, Dr. Albin Whitworth, will lead the congregation.
Included will be premier performances of two brand new, original compositions of tunes composed for existing hymn texts by Charles Wesley. The congregation will hear these new tunes sung and will also be invited to sing them. Asbury has recently sponsored a new tune contest, advertised globally, for all Asbury alumni and present students. Contest winners will be announced and presented at this service.
During this tercentennial year, the seminary commissioned well known British artist, Richard Gilmore Douglas, to paint a portrait of Mr. Charles Wesley. The portrait will be unveiled during this chapel period. Original paintings produced by artist Shannon Steed, Asbury student, will also be featured during the chapel hour.
