What Mentors Do:
Jesus established a model for mentoring, and we seek to follow that model at Asbury Seminary. It is a pattern that will help shape the lives of others for future ministry. As a trained mentor for Asbury Seminary’s mentored ministry program, you will:
- Keep accountability with your student
- Pray with your student
- Reflect theologically upon recent and upcoming experiences
- Advise from a Scriptural perspective
- Speak honestly out of love
Mentors do all this through weekly, one-hour sessions with their students, discussing the students’ learning process.
Requirements of Mentors:
- A theological education (ministry degree)
- Five years ministry experience following the completion of that degree
- Participation in a mentor training session (offered twice each year)
- Completion of the mentor profile, submitted to the mentored ministry office
- Completion of the Mentor-Student Contract
- Commitment to help students determine their Growth Goals
- Completion of the Mentor Evaluation, at the end of the semester. (Found in Mentored Ministry Handbook)
Mentoring is a leadership “catch-phrase” for many. At Asbury Seminary we take it very seriously for our future depends on it—and you.
As a seminary we can offer large quantities of (and high-quality) content to our students but it remains pretty much meaningless if we don’t have you, our on-site faculty, helping students put their learning “on the streets.”
Since you’re performing such a vital role we’ll leave nothing to chance. We offer required training events to get you up to speed with our model and help you understand what we’re looking for in a Mentor. We’re here to serve you and increase your mentoring effectiveness.
We are grateful for your willingness to take on this ministry and leave a ministry legacy imprinted on one of our students.
