THM(BS)
The Master of Theology (Biblical Studies) program is designed for the enhanced understanding of and commitment to personal and social holiness through practices of moral, personal and spiritual formation, in a context of accountability to a community of faith and dependence on the Spirit of Christ; and substantive understanding of the field of biblical studies appropriate for advanced academic study of Scripture in the service of the church, with a focus on scholarship for research and publication.

Admission Requirements

  • Application
  • $50 non-refundable application fee
  • Accredited bachelor's degree with 3.5/4.0 minimum GPA*
  • Accredited master of divinity degree or masters degree (60 hours or two years) in a theological discipline with a 3.5/4.0 minimum GPA*
  • Official transcripts of all postsecondary schools attended sent to Admissions directly from the institution
  • Personal history essay
  • Reference forms

    • 4 professors or other scholars
  • Writing sample of academic work completed within past 3 years and reflecting a research interest appropriate to the degree program.
  • Intermediate-level competency in Biblical Hebrew or Koine Greek, and at least an introductory-level competency in the other biblical language.
  • GRE score of 600 Verbal*
  • For applicants who native language is other than English, 90 internet (577 paper) TOEFL score or 7.5 IELTS
  • Access to the Internet (registration, course schedules, syllabi and much of the program's communication is online)

Course Structure

(30 hours, full-time residential, Wilmore campus only)

ThM(BS) Core (9 hours)

  • Research Methods in OT Interpretation
  • Research Methods in NT Interpretation
  • Seminar on the History of Biblical Interpretation

Electives (21 hours)

  • Twenty-one hours shall include one biblical language; an additional research language cognate to student's area of study; and additional coursework in biblical studies.

*If your GPA [or GRE scores] do not meet the minimum requirement or does not accurately reflect your ability to succeed at Asbury, you will have an opportunity to explain in your personal history essay.
