The Doctor of Philosophy (Biblical Studies) program is designed to prepare effective professors of biblical studies for seminaries and colleges, in and beyond the United States, who can interpret the current knowledge to students and to advance the body of knowledge that can inform the mission of the church.

Admission Requirements

  • Application
  • $50 non-refundable application fee
  • Accredited bachelor's degree with 3.50/4.00 minimum GPA*
  • Accredited master of divinity degree or masters degree (60 hours or two years) in a theological discipline with a 3.50/4.00 minimum GPA*
  • Official transcripts of all postsecondary schools attended sent to Admissions directly from the institution
  • Personal history
  • Reference forms

    • 4 professors or other scholars
  • GRE scores of 600 verbal and 5 analytical*
  • Intermediate-level competency in biblical Hebrew or Koine Greek, and at least an introductory-level competency in the other biblical language
  • Writing sample of academic work completed within past three years and reflecting a research interest appropriate to the degree program
  • Purpose statement noting reason for Ph.D. pursuit, vocational understanding and research specialization
  • For applicants who native language is other than English, 100 internet (600 paper) TOEFL score or 7.5 IELTS

Course Structure

(48 hours, full-time residential, Kentucky campus only)

Core Requirements (12 hours)

  • Research Methods in OT Interpretation
  • Research Methods in NT Interpretation
  • Seminar on the History of Biblical Interpretation
  • Instructional Theory and Development

General Electives (36 hours)

  • Forty-eight hours shall include no less than 30 hours of languages cognate to biblical studies and 800-level courses in biblical studies. Eighteen hours may include courses at the 600- and 700-level.
