Doctor of Philosophy: General Information
The doctor of philosophy degree programs, building upon the foundations of appropriate master's degrees, are designed to advance the student's knowledge in the theological, contextual, spiritual and strategic literatures, make a contribution to the body of knowledge in regard to some issue, problem or opportunity within a specialized field, and prepare students for leadership in the academy or the field.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the general admission requirements for postgraduate studies programs, the following specific requirements are necessary for admission to the doctor of philosophy program.
- A grade point average of 3.50/4.00 in previous work is required.
- Knowledge of languages (biblical, research or field languages) other than English demonstrated by transcripts (college or graduate) of language study or by documented proficiency in any language(s) or other research tools necessary for the dissertation research.
- A Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of 600 verbal and 5 analytical.
- For applicants whose native language is other than English, a TOEFL score of 600 or an IELTS score of 7.5 TOEFL and IELTS will not be waived.
- Three years of ministry experience in a culture or subculture different from the applicant's home culture.
- Knowledge of the field language in which the applicant will serve and/or do research.
- Submission of a purpose statement noting reason for Ph.D. pursuit, vocational understanding and research specialization.
- The seminary may require an interview with any applicant.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the general graduation requirements for postgraduate studies programs, the following specific requirements are necessary to receive the doctor of philosophy degree:
- Satisfactory complete the required hours of course work.
- Attain a grade point average of 3.50/4.00.
- Pass the qualifying examination(s).
- Write and defend a dissertation proposal.
- Complete and defend a dissertation.
- Fulfill all degree requirements in not more than eight years from date of matriculation, and in not more than five years after passing qualifying examinations.
