 Personal History Frequently Asked Questions

Summarize your personal history:

Using your best English composition, in 1000 to 1400 words, address the following topics. Please type or print clearly, and make sure your name can be clearly seen.

All applicants:

  1. Discuss your relationship to Christ and your spiritual pilgrimage.
  2. Discuss your motivation for preparing for ministry.
  3. Reflect on your understanding of Christian ministry.
  4. Describe your recent vocational experiences.
  5. Discuss your experience in Christian ministry and any other relevant experiences.
  6. (Optional) If you are married, describe your spouse's attitudes toward your plans for seminary education and future ministry.
  7. (Optional) If you feel your cumulative grade point average or academic test scores do not adequately reflect your abilities to flourish at Asbury Seminary, please explain.

Th.M., D.Min., D.Miss., Ph.D. applicants (additional topics):

 

  1. State briefly the reasons you are prompted to pursue study in the particular program area you have chosen.
  2. Describe what you hope to gain through the program you have chosen. Give specific goals, and personal or professional needs.
  3. For Th.M., D.Miss., and Ph.D. applicants only: A scholarly research-oriented paper must be submitted with the application. This paper should reflect the applicant's ability to identify appropriate sources, critically reflect upon them and draw sound conclusions. Good form and style should be followed. (Sermons are not acceptable.) Papers which were written during M.Div. or M.A. degree programs are acceptable.
  4. For D.Miss. and Ph.D.(IS) applicants only: Beginning with the most recent, list (including dates) your ministry experiences in various cross-cultural (and cross-subcultural) situations. As you reflect on these experiences, write an essay indicating what you have learned about cultural dynamics and ministry effectiveness. Also indicate what you believe you have yet to learn and how the Asbury program in missiology will assist you in that learning.
  5. For D.Miss. and Ph.D. applicants only: List the language(s) (including English) used in your ministry and indicate your relative proficiency.
  6. For Ph.D. applicants only: Submit a reflection paper indicating possible research interests.
