Catapult Conference (Mobile, AL)

Dr. Brian Russell, professor of Biblical Studies at Asbury Seminary, is participating in the first ever Catapult Conference, at Christ United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama. Derek Webb will be leading music, while speakers such as...
Alan and Deb Hirsch, Reggie McNeal, and Mike Slaughter add to the experience. Breakout sessions will include Lance Ford, cofounder (with Alan Hirsch) of shapevine.com. Asbury Seminary students can receive one hour of academic credit for attending the conference. (Note: standard tuition applies and you must go onto the AIS system to register for CL665, Christian Leadership Independent Study. Please refer to the ATS catalog for Independent Study guidelines.) 2010 Evans Lecture (Dunnam Campus, FL)

This year’s Evans Lecture will not be something to miss! You are invited to a special luncheon hosted in the Harper Community Room of the Asbury Seminary Campus in Orlando, beginning at 11:30am. Dr. Tennent will be our guest speaker during the luncheon. Additionally, the members of the Florida Council will be using this opportunity to meet and dine with our alumni. Following the luncheon, everyone would be invited to stay for a special message from John Michael Talbot.

UPDATES
Special Congratulations to Dr. Matthew Hook (2005), for receiving the 2010 Distinguished Alum Award from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Hook received his M.Div. from G.E.T.S. in 1991, and later a D.Min. from Asbury Theological Seminary. He was awarded for his merit and dedication to youth ministries and financial and spiritual leadership as a senior pastor. Dr. Hook currently serves as pastor in Dexter United Methodist Church, in Dexter, Michigan.
Grove Armstrong (1956) has moved from Casa Grande, AZ to Waxhaw, NC to the campus of JAARS, Inc, the logistical support for the Wycliffe Bible Translators. Grove is the Partnership Ministries Representative for the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. His wife Charity works in the Airport Safety office and writes for the Creative Services department. He is Minister Emeritus of the Central Congregational Church in Derry, NH where he was Senior Minister for over 16 years. Since retirement he has written the book, The Kingdom That Is Transforming The World, and ministered for eleven years in the Arizona State Prison system as Seminar Instructor, Bible Teacher and Preacher.
Sean Gladding (2002), a graduate from the Master of Divinity program, will be published by IVP next month. For the past ten years, Sean and his wife Rebecca have been leading an introductory bible study inspired by the New Testament Theology class with Professor Mary Fisher, which in turn served as the inspiration for the book. OBITUARIES
SNELL, Verlyn R. (1962), age 75, of Overland Park, Kansas, died June 18, 2010, following a fall. Verlyn graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1952 and from the University of Western Ontario in 1957. In 1962, he graduated from Asbury Seminary, Wilmore, with a bachelor of divinity degree. In 1976, he received a doctor ministry degree from Phillips University, Enid, Okla. While at Asbury, he met Sammie Fisher from Waynoka, OK. They were married Aug. 17, 1960. Verlyn is survived by his wife, Sammie; and their three daughters. In addition to his pastoral ministry he also traveled in general youth work, preached and sang at many revivals and church camps and served as chaplain at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City.
MAHAFFY, Hazel A. (NG ALUM), age 96, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Sanilac Medical Care Facility, Sandusky. Hazel received her Master of Arts Degree in 1958 from Eastern Michigan and also attended Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. She taught 35 years in Yale Public Schools. Hazel traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia and Egypt. She visited the Holy Land in 1951 and 1953 then went on a world tour in 1963. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and retired as Yale United Methodist Church Organist in 1994.
CLINGER, Rev. Maurice E. (NG ALUM), Clinger slipped into the presence of Jesus at The Manor in Morrisville. He graduated from Upper Sandusky, Ohio High School and Ohio Northern University. After attending Asbury Seminary, he and his wife, Arline, went to Colombia as missionaries with the Southern Methodists. On returning to the States, they joined the Church of the Nazarene, pastored a Mexican church in Albuquerque, N.M., and attended Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo., pastoring Mexican churches there. His wife survives him, as do his two sons, and daughter.
FALL, Albert A. Fall, (1953) age 86, of Traverse City, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010, at his home. Having graduated from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. Following his discharge, he continued his education at Asbury College and Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Ky. On Dec. 18, 1949, he married the love of his life, Hilda Elizabeth Rou in Reddick, FL., a marriage that spanned 59 years. Hilda passed away on April 14, 2009. A retired Free Methodist Pastor, Pastor Fall served his Lord faithfully at churches in Erie, Snover, Buchanan, Garden City, Three Oaks, Hillsdale, Watervliet, Mayville, Deerfield and Bangor.
MOODY, Rev. William C. (1966) age 80, died April 2nd, 2010. The Rev. Moody was an alumnus of both Asbury College and Seminary, and he retired from the United Methodist Church after more than 30 years in ministry. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anne Helphinstine Moody, two sons.
HENDERSHOTT, Rev. Warren H. (1946), age 86, Minneapolis, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Louise, in 2002; and a daughter, Darlene. Survivors include three sons, a daughter, and four grandchildren.
JOHNSON, Rev. Fay W. (1954), age 91, of Cumberland was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 at Cumberland Extended Care Unit. After high school, he entered the Army Air Force in 1942 and served four years with the Flying Tigers in Burma and China. He met the love of his life, Dorothy Livingston and they were married on Jan. 30, 1948. Fay attended Marion College in Marion, IN., receiving his BA Degree in English in 1951. He then attended Asbury Theological Seminary where he received his Bachelor of Divinity in 1954, and his Master of Divinity and Master of Sacred Theology in 1972. He served churches in Staffordsburg, Ky., Paris, Ill., Fairmont, Ill., Cuba City, Wis., Cumberland, Wis. (1962-1968), Darlington, Wis., Arlington, Wis. and LaFarge, Wis. He retired in 1981 but continued to serve as interim pastor of United Methodist and Presbyterian churches. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, three sons, three daughters, ten grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
