Dr. Bauer is a leading authority on the Gospel of Matthew. He has written three books, The Gospel of the King: Studies in the Gospel of Matthew, The Structure of Matthew’s Gospel: A Study in Literary Design and An Annotated Guide to Biblical Resources for Ministry, and has edited two volumes. He is currently preparing two additional books. Dr. Bauer first taught at Asbury Seminary as a fellow in New Testament Greek during the 1979-80 school year. During 1980-81 he was a visiting instructor at Ashland Theological Seminary, and was a visiting professor at the School of Theology at Virginia Union during 1982-83. He joined the Asbury Seminary faculty in 1984, achieving tenured status in 1990. Dr. Bauer, who served as the director for Asbury’s 1992-94 institutional self-study, was installed into the Ralph Waldo Beeson Chair of Inductive Biblical Studies in 1993. In 2005 he was appointed Dean of the School of Biblical Interpretation and Proclamation. Dr. Bauer is an ordained elder in The Ohio Annual Conference of the Free Methodist Church, where he has served under pastoral appointment. He has written numerous articles and presented a host of papers to scholarly societies and ecclesiastical bodies. He has served as chairperson of the Matthew Group of the Society of Biblical Literature and is presently Chairperson of the Hebrews Consultation of the Society of Biblical Literature. As a student he was elected to the Theta Phi Honor Society and received the American Bible Society Award for Excellence in Biblical Studies. He is an active member of the following academic societies: the Catholic Biblical Association, the Institute for Biblical Research, the Society of Biblical Literature and the Wesleyan Theological Society.
