Dr. Coppedge, a member of the Asbury Seminary faculty since 1977, was installed into the Ralph Waldo Beeson Chair of Christian Theology in March 1994. He has a vast range of experience in and out of the classroom. Prior to joining the Asbury Seminary faculty, Dr. Coppedge served as academic dean and professor of Old Testament at the Biblical Seminary of Colombia, South America, where he was under appointment as a missionary with OMS International. A member of the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church, Dr. Coppedge has experience as a pastor in both Georgia and Kentucky, and has preached extensively in Central and South America, as well as in Scotland and England. He also worked for a brief time with The Navigators. Dr. Coppedge is currently the president of The Barnabas Foundation, an organization founded to promote discipleship ministries in seminaries, colleges, local churches and mission organizations. He is the author of The Biblical Principles of Discipleship, which lays out the biblical and theological foundations for The Barnabas Foundation. He has also written John Wesley in Theological Debate, a description of the theological debates concerning predestination and Christian perfection among the Arminians and Calvinists of the 18th-century revival. Other works include Portraits of God (InterVarsity Press), a chapter in the book Doing Theology in Today’s World and a series of guidebooks on mature discipleship: In His Image, Following Jesus, Loving Jesus and A Workbook on Spiritual Gifts. Dr. Coppedge is married to the former Elizabeth Kinlaw. They have four children: Katy Beth, Christy, William Asbury and Susannah.
